Discovery Series

poster & flyer series

Design Studio, 2023

In the course Design Studio, I worked with the SDSU Arts Alive department and other students to create a series of posters and a flyer to promote their Discovery Series. Each student was tasked with creating their own solution to three out of the seven proposed events meant to take place throughout the semester, and the chosen design system would be applied to the remaining four. Each proposed event came from different faculty from SDSU, making the requirements for each poster a unique set of challenges to meet. Furthermore, we were asked to create a logo mark for the SDSU Arts Alive department to use as a rebrand for their discovery series.

For each solution, I used a gradient mesh background to create depth and visual interest, especially when paired with the layering text. Furthermore, each solution has a system which combines imagery and an illustrative graphic to create an aspect of storytelling and dimensionality. For the Indigenous Ecologies poster, plant imagery speaks to the topic of ecological concerns while the illustrative graphic comes from research of the Indigenous peoples of the Amazon's sacred body art. For the Creative Activism poster, I focused on the guest artist/speaker Cannupa Hanska Luger and the topic of activism. For the imagery of activism, I used a megaphone and for an illustrative, textural graphic I referenced Luger's artwork which utilizes similar cloth patterns. As for the Hearing Conservation for Musicians poster, I emphasized the danger musicians face to create urgency. The illustration and imagery work together and intertwine, depicting ears being attacked by a cacophony of pain and music notes, seemingly from the damaging noise created by music. The panel utilizes the same imagery in a condensed form to give room for additional information. For the discovery series logo, I worked the ‘d’ from discovery into a question mark to focus on the inquisitive nature of the series. Combined, the logo mark is somewhat playful  while still staying true to the serious and informative intention of the discovery series.
